Vicarious Trauma: Working with Trauma Survivors

In this educational CD-Rom, produced by April Gerlock, Ph.D. ARNP, you will be introduced to the phenomena commonly referred to as vicarious trauma (VT) or vicarious traumatization.  The presentation starts with a definition of VT and how it relates to working with trauma survivors, as well as how it is both similar and different from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Material covered includes a general overview of the neurobiology of trauma, history of the concept of VT and how the language and understanding of the concept has changed over time.  The final section is a discussion of what places people at risk of VT as well as how people stay resilient when working with trauma survivors.  Included are discussion questions that may be done individually or as a group learning experience, and a list of references.

April Gerlock, Ph.D, ARNP. is Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Nursing and Research Associate for the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System, Health Service Research and Development NW Center of Excellence.

Discussion Questions included.
