Ending the Cycle of Violence

This program series originated from a two year pilot program with the San Diego School District.  The response from teachers, counselors, and students has been excellent.

Ending the Cycle of Violence is a groundbreaking series that provides a bold new approach to Violence Prevention, and introduces youth to the essential life skills of:

  • Understanding Consequences
  • Developing Empathy
  • Practicing Forgiveness
  • Making Non-Violent Choices

The series is based on the nationally recognized community-based prevention programs developed by TKF, an educational foundation started in memory of Tariq Khamisa, a 20-year-old college student who was shot and killed by 14-year-old Tony Hicks in San Diego in 1995.

The US Office Of Juvenile Justice And Delinquency Prevention Model Programs Guide reports violence prevention curricula is a powerful way to promote cognitive and social development for at-risk youth.

Ending the Cycle of Violence curriculum has been implemented by San Diego County Juvenile Detention Facilities and area schools for specific use with at-risk youth.

Ending the Cycle of Violence has also been selected as a recommended middle school health curriculum by the Dallas Independent School District.

The program is comprised of 6 DVDs:

  • From Murder to Forgiveness - 35:00
  • Violence is Real and Hurts Everyone - 23:00
  • Everyone Deserves to be Loved and Treated Well - 16:30
  • Actions Have Consequences - 17:30
  • Choosing to Forgive Instead of Seeking Revenge - 24:30
  • Making the Non-Violent Choice - 20:30

Using examples from Tariq and Tony's story as well as the stories of other youth and young role models, ENDING THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE vividly communicates the contrasting realities of violence and non-violence, revenge and forgiveness. The videos also contain engaging animated sequences depicting some of the latest research on brain chemistry and how choices can affect brain development with commentary by juvenile forensic psychologist, Dr. Jeffrey Rowe.

Perfect for:

  • School-based counseling groups
  • After-school programs
  • Gang-intervention programs
  • Victim-Offender Reconciliation Programs
  • Juvenile institutions
  • At-risk youth groups
  • Community resource centers

"Skillfully conceptualized and powerfully executed, the Ending the Cycle of Violence program is an exceptional resource for any youth program. Comprehensive in scope, this compelling intervention addresses the cycle of violence from its root causes to the liberating and healing process of forgiveness."

~ Robin Casarjian, M.A. Director, The Lionheart Foundation sponsor of The National Emotional Literacy Projects for Prisoners and Youth at Risk. Co-author, Power Source: Taking Charge of Your Life.

"The 'Ending the Cycle of Violence' series offers compassionate and concrete tools to heal and transform the lives of children who experience or express violence. Working through the Counseling Division of the Dallas Independent School District, I have witnessed the immediate shifts in attitudes in some of the students after the first facilitation in their school. This series offers powerful opportunities to mentor youth leaders instead of gang members and is essential in every school district."

~ Veronica Valles, RSCP, Community Service Director, Center for Spiritual Living, Dallas

"I have been very pleased with the program. In my very busy days I am always thrilled to find a program that is classroom ready. And even better, this one is of EXCELLENT quality. What I am most thrilled about is the deep and thoughtful response of the students to the material...The discussions that are generated afterwards are phenomenal...I have never had such focused and deeply pensive discussions as this program has generated..."

~ Fred Laskowski, MFT, School Counselor, Dana Middle School, San Diego Unified School District
